The First Time I Made Red Buttercream I Almost Cried: A Tale of Cake Decorating and a Lesson in Color Theory
Cake decorating can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a bit of a challenge, especially when it comes to getting the right color for your icing. I learned this the hard way when I was asked to make a cake for a friend’s daughter’s birthday party. She wanted an Elmo cake, complete with red icing. I thought, “How hard could it be?” and agreed to take on the challenge. Little did I know, red is one of the hardest colors to achieve in icing. I started making the icing the day before the cake was due, thinking everything was going well. But as I added more…

Start Your Day Off Right With This Morning Glory Loaf
I can’t believe it’s been so long since my last post! So much has happened since then, the cliff notes version is I left my Marketing job to go work for another company I thought would be great. Turns out it wasn’t and I left there after only two months. I am just waiting to hear my start date from another place which I”m sure will be much better, it honestly can’t be worse than the last place. Working at that new place I didn’t have time to focus on my baking so I had to put it on hold, which was fine but I had started to gain momentum…

The Eggnog Loaf That Will Be A Holiday Hit
It wouldn’t be the holidays if there wasn’t an overabundance of eggnog. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of eggnog, or mixing any alcohol with milk products, sounds like you are asking for a disaster. This recipe had quite a few iterations, I couldn’t seem to get the loaf part tasting anything like eggnog. It seemed to either taste like plain white cake or vanilla. I think it was about the fifth time I finally got it right! I find this cake tastes better the following day once the glaze has had time to soak into the loaf. It seems to really bring out the eggnog flavour in…

Easy Peanut Butter Marshmallow Bars That Will Make You Feel Like a Kid Again.
Love or hate them, everyone’s mom used to make these. They are peanut butter bars that have fruit-flavoured mini marshmallows in them. They made an appearance only once a year, usually around the holidays, and they seem to be very much like raisins, you either love them or hate them. I decided to add them to the Christmas menu this year, Kevin and I had the debate if people would actually order these or if they would just be added and only one person would order them. I am happy to say that they were a larger hit than either Kevin or I could have imagined! There was one afternoon…

This Apple Caramel Loaf Gives All The Fall Feels
This recipe came from a lot of trial and error. I had wanted to make a Salted Caramel Loaf and it just wasn’t working out, and not from lack of trying. This was about the 7th recipe that came from a lot of loaves either tasting like just vanilla cake, or the loaf flavours not complimenting each other well at all. This loaf has quite a few steps to it and I wouldn’t recommend making this your first loaf ever to make. I have tried to break this down into manageable steps, so hopefully, it all makes sense. I thought this loaf would be a bigger hit than it really…

Pumpkin Loaf With Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing is Perfect for Fall
For October I decided to try something new and offer a seasonal loaf that will only be available for the month. To my surprise, it was an overwhelming success! I am still blown away by the support that I receive with my baking! When I was trying to come up with this recipe I made this loaf probably about six or seven times and I always felt that it was missing something. I wasn’t sure if I should add pumpkin seeds to it or pecans but nothing was seeming to be the right fit for it. Once I added the icing to it though I felt that it was perfect!…

Unbelievably Easy Peach Crumble
After eating our way through 2 pans of peach cobbler, we still had some peaches leftover that was well on their way to becoming overripe. I needed to make something with them instead of throwing them out, and I don’t think we could eat another cobbler. I came across this peach crumble recipe and couldn’t believe how simple it looked so I thought I would try it out. This will be the last of the peach recipes for a bit, I promise. I’m coming to the sad realization that summer is officially over and that we are well on our way to autumn. THE BEST PEACHES TO USE FOR BAKING…

Easy Peach Cobbler
I’m not sure how it’s September already. Seems like yesterday I was complaining about my sunburn and the 34°C heat. Now the Autumn colours are coming out and the temperatures are cooler, which means I have been baking a lot. Kevin and I made a trip to one of the local Farmers Market in Calgary that we hadn’t been to in a long time. There was so much great-looking produce, but with there only two of us we can’t stock up on too much or it will go bad before we can use it. We ended up buying more than we needed, as we usually do, like a case of…
