Homemade Twix Bars Will Make Your Holidays Sweeter.
I used to manage a bakery that made the best homemade Twix bars and I have been trying to replicate the recipe for a couple of years now. I get close but there was always something missing. This recipe is the closest I have ever come!
With this recipe, you need to have patience. If you put the next layer on and the one below it hasn’t cooled it will not set properly and you will have everything running together.
If you love Twix bars you will love this recipe. It is the perfect combination of shortbread, with creamy caramel and topped with chocolate.
Here are some tips for making a great Twix Bar:
It’s important to continually stir the caramel sauce while you are making it. If it isn’t being mixed constantly, the mixture can harden and become tough or gritty.
Once you have all the layers assembled, they will need to harden slightly before eating. Place the Twix bar in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to help it set faster.
You can use whichever chocolate you prefer. This Twix recipe works with milk or dark chocolate.
INGREDIENTS
SHORTBREAD LAYER:
1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup butter, softened
CARAMEL LAYER:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
2 Tablespoons corn syrup
CHOCOLATE LAYER:
2 cups chocolate chips (milk or dark, both work)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line a 9×9 pan with parchment paper or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
Combine the flour and sugar in a medium-sized bowl. Then cut the butter in with a pastry cutter or two forks, until it forms a crumb mixture.
Then press down into the pan and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
For the caramel, add the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk to a medium saucepan and melt over medium heat.
Bring to a boil and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring constantly, if you do not stir it constantly it will burn and harden quickly. Remove from heat and stir an additional 2 minutes, or until it starts to thicken.
Pour over cooled shortbread bars. Allow to cool.
Once the caramel has become firm, mix the chocolate and oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high for 1 minute. Stir and cook in 15-second intervals, until the chocolate is melted.
Then pour over the caramel layer and allow to set. Place in the fridge to help set faster.
Once the chocolate has hardened, cut into squares.
